Insomnia, clinically, is characterized by not only inadequate sleep length and continuity but also the feeling of not being well-rested after sleep. It often results from underlying mental or physical health issues like mental health disorders, physical health problems, lifestyle choices, environmental factors, and certain medications.

Insomnia is usually classified based on when and how the sleep issues occur with types like: Initial Insomnia, Middle Insomnia, and Late (or Terminal) Insomnia. Insomnia can also be classified based on its causes and characteristics into types like: Psychophysiological Insomnia, Insomnia Associated with Psychiatric Disorders, Insomnia Due to Substance Use, Insomnia Related to Sleep-Induced Breathing Disorders, Insomnia Due to Movement Disorders, Insomnia Associated with Physical Illness, Childhood-Onset Insomnia, Insomnia with Atypical Polysomnographic Findings, Pseudoinsomnia (Short Sleeper Syndrome), and Subjective Insomnia without Polysomnographic Correlation.

Diagnosis of insomnia usually begins with a thorough clinical evaluation by a sleep specialist. If needed, polysomnography (PSG) might be recommended. Insomnia can be transient, recurring, or chronic. Once chronic, it can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. Early recognition and intervention are key to preventing acute insomnia from becoming chronic.
